When Jake Falconer joined the Army Reserves six years ago, skiing wasn't part of his game plan - and certainly not Telemark.

But now, after three years of trying, he's made it on to the Army team competing at this year's inter-services snow sports championships in Meribel.

Today's event is the sprint. Don't be fooled by the name though - in Telemark everything is a marathon.

Before any race or competition gets underway, a full inspection is carried out.

Jake's first run was not exactly what he planned, but everything is part of the learning process.

He was more pleased with his second run, finishing 12th overall in a very experienced field of 19.

Not bad for a first timer with plenty of promise.
