Operation Herrick: The Patient Pathway

Forces Radio BFBS' Richard Hutchinson gathered most of his material during Op Herrick 17, when he was given unprecedented access to the medical staff in Afghanistan, then traced the route from the point of injury back to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Richard said:

“At one point I was allowed into the Emergency Trauma Room at Camp Bastion, which receives casualties directly from the battlefield.

“One of the nurses there talked about the procedures, but also about her dedication to the job. She explained how it made her a 'better person and a better nurse', as well as the realisation that 'life is precious'. I feel very privileged to have been able to make this programme.”

Richard was ‘Highly Commended’ for 'Operation Herrick: The Patient Pathway'.

In the 'Current affairs documentary – radio' category at the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) Awards, he faced global competition from entries recorded in Korea, Rwanda, India, Taiwan and Syria.
