Former Olympian Derek Redmond’s incredible story is still celebrated as one of the most poignant and powerful moments in Olympic history.
Not only does it tell the story of real heart, grit, determination but it's also one of the greatest father & son moments of all time.
During his career Derek held the British record for the 400 metres sprint, and won gold medals in the 4x400 metres relay at the World Championships and European Championships.
Watch the incredibly powerful father/son moment from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics 400m semi-final below.
During a speech in which former President Barack Obama gave his support to the Chicago Olympic Bid for 2016, the 44th President of the United States said:
“Derek Redmond… bravely making it through with a little help. Moments of euphoria after years of hard work and moments when the human spirit triumphed over injury that should have been impossible to overcome."
Derek’s Dad Jim Redmond, the hero of this story, recalls:
"When I got there he insisted on finishing the race, so I said to him: "We started your career together and we’ll finish it together".
Jay James and Hal Stewart interviewed Derek for the Big Father's Day Show which was simulcast on Forces Radio BFBS and BFBS Extra for military overseas.
